I rented this house with hopes of buying. Paid my two thousand dollar security deposit and rent for the past 6 months. My landlord said he would sell to me but one day he just comes to introduce me to the new landlord. I wrote the new landlord a check for the rent but he still has not renewed the lease. Am i supposed to get my security deposit back or what? This seems fishy and i think i might want to bite the bullet and buy a 7 bedroom house.|||Did you have a lease to own agreement in writing with the landlord? If not then he had no obligation and screwed you over. It is a creepy thing to do, but still legal. If you did have a contract, and kept a copy, you may able to sue the previous landlord for monetary damages.
As for the security deposit %26amp; your lease, if your lease was greater than 6 months the new owner/landlord is probably honoring that lease, and the old owner/landlord likely transferred the $2000 security deposit to him upon the closing (transfer of property). To be sure you should contact the new landlord.
I understand that this seems fishy to you, but the new landlord did nothing wrong, as of right now. I work in the industry and it is very common for people to sell property with existing leases in place. Any prepaid rent/deposits are transferred to the new owner and the contracts in place are legally binding for the duration they were originally written.
Hope this helps!|||You need an attorney - Quickly!
