Can my landlord make me pay a security deposit on my apt. when nobody else in the building had to pay one?

I live in Maine. I am the cleanest and always pay my rent on time. We are renewing my lease. And he wants me to pay a sec. dep. I am close with all my neighbors and NOBODY is paying this but me. That can't be legal.|||It would be an issue if he were collecting a security deposit from you because you are black, or because you are Jewish, or because you are Japanese, or because you have children...in other words, if he is discriminating against you due to your race, nationality, religion, or familial status. Otherwise, it's not illegal.|||You should just find a different apartment. Clearly this landlord has an issue with you, if you're being held to different rules then others in the building. Perhaps you rubbed him/her the wrong way at some point and this is their way of discouraging you from renewing. Either that, or he/she thinks they can pull one over on you, and that you will do anything that is required to stay in that rental.

Either way, you should just find another place. If you decide to push it and attempt to file charges against the landlord, you wouldn't want to stay there anyway. Once you take it to that level, then you will have a landlord who hates you and will make your life miserable.

Bite the bullet and find a rental that is run by a responsible and fair landlord.

Good luck. I'm sorry your landlord is putting your through this.

Brit|||Perhaps when your neighbors leases are up they too will have to pay a security deposit. If that is what is now required for you to keep the apartment, then yes, you will have to pay the security deposit. Otherwise, plan on moving.|||yes its legal. Maybe he's starting to require deposits from everyone and your lease happens to be the first one up for renewal since he made that decision.|||Yes. Each lease is negoiated separately and do not have to be the same.|||Maybe you didn't have references and they did.
